Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a modular kitchen design?

A modular kitchen, as the name indicates, is one that is assembled out of prefabricated modules. The cabinets come in standardised sizes and can be put together in many different configurations, based on the space available and your needs.

  • Why should you choose a modular kitchen design over a carpenter-made one?

Modular kitchens have many advantages compared to traditional carpenter-built ones. Since they're made in factories, they have perfect finishes and guaranteed quality. They use space well and are designed with comfort in mind, so you won't have to strain while cooking or cleaning. Also, these kitchens are flexible - you can easily change, replace, or add new parts whenever you want!

  • How do I choose the best modular kitchen layout for my home?

The layout will depend on the space available, the plumbing and electrical points, and the location of doors and windows. Think of your cooking habits, storage needs and lifestyle. Popular layouts include U-shaped modular kitchen designs, L-shaped modular kitchen designs, straight one-wall designs, and parallel modular kitchen designs. A larger kitchen can accommodate an island as well.
  • What is the kitchen work triangle all about?

The kitchen work triangle is a design principle used by interior designers to plan your kitchen workspaces. The three main work areas (sink, stove and refrigerator) should be placed in a triangular layout with each point between 4 to 9 feet apart for maximum efficiency.

  • What is the best small modular kitchen design?

Choose a space-saving layout like a straight or L-shaped design, and maximise vertical space by adding an extra loft. Use pull-out organisers, corner solutions, and pantry units to organise the storage well. Remember to shop for compact built-in appliances to save space. Light colours and reflective surfaces will make the space appear less cramped.

  • What is the average cost of a modular kitchen in India?

The cost of modular kitchens will vary based on the size of the kitchen, the materials, and the accessories. You can use our Modular Kitchen Cost Calculator tool for modular kitchen designs with price, by keying in your specifications. For instance, the minimum cost of an L-shaped modular kitchen design that is 8 feet by 6 feet will be about INR 1.3 lakhs.

  • Are modular kitchens more expensive than carpenter-made kitchens?

Modular kitchens are available at various price points, ranging from cost-effective to luxe options.  They are more cost-effective than carpenter-made kitchens if you take into account the long-term value through quality, durability, and the ability to replace individual parts.

  • What are the accessories that I could choose from for my modular kitchen design?

Thoughtfully chosen storage accessories and organisers will help to make your kitchen more efficient and maximise its storage potential. Some of the must-have accessories for your modular kitchen design include pull-out pantry units, corner carousel/magic corners, drawer organisers, roll-out baskets, spice racks, bottle pull-outs, and more.

  • What is the average lifespan of my modular kitchen?

The life of your kitchen depends on your usage and how well you maintain it. The materials you choose also play a large role in the longevity of your kitchen. With proper care, your modular kitchen can last 15 to 20 years and continue to look as good as new! A significant advantage of modular kitchens is that individual parts can be replaced if damaged — this will extend its life further.

  • How do I maintain my modular kitchen in India?

At the end of every cooking session, wipe down your kitchen counters and cabinets with a damp microfibre cloth. Install a high-velocity chimney and use it while cooking, so that grease does not build up. Deep clean your chimney and hob using a 50:50 solution of vinegar and water once a week. Always keep the windows open to let in sunlight and fresh air, and maintain hygiene in your kitchen.

  • Can I clean my modular kitchen cabinets with water?

If your modular kitchen cabinets are finished with laminate, acrylic, membrane, PU or lacquer, all it takes is a quick wipe with a soft damp (not wet) cloth to keep them clean. Follow immediately with a dry microfibre cloth. For stubborn grease and grime, mix equal parts white vinegar and water, dampen the cloth and wipe in circles. Do not rub hard.

  • Can I move my modular kitchen to my new home?

Yes, you can, and that’s one of the main advantages of a modular kitchen design! Your kitchen cabinets can be dismantled and reassembled in your new home. Even if some parts are damaged in the process, they can be swapped out for new ones.

  • How long will the installation of my modular kitchen take?

Your HomeLane kitchen will typically be installed in under a week at your home, with minimal disruption to your daily routine. This is much faster than a carpenter-made kitchen, which will usually take weeks or even months to be completed!

  • What are the best materials and finishes for my modular kitchen design?

We deal with premium branded materials that are sourced from across the world. The best core materials for your cabinets include BWP or BWR plywood, MDF, HDF, HDHMR board and particle board. The best finishes include laminates, acrylic, PU, lacquer and membrane.

  • What are the disadvantages of particle board and MDF, and how can they be overcome?

Particle boards and MDF are less moisture-resistant than plywood, and could swell when exposed to water. They also have a lower screw-holding capacity than plywood. These negatives can be overcome by applying edge banding and sealing all edges completely to prevent exposure to moisture. Use quality hardware and fittings for sturdiness and longevity.

  • Are my modular kitchen cabinets susceptible to water damage?

How long your kitchen lasts will largely depend on the materials used. Marine plywood and water-resistant plywood are your best bets for areas exposed to water, as they offer superior protection against moisture damage. MDF and particle board should be completely sealed on all sides and any water spills must be wiped at once.

  • What should I keep in mind when choosing my hob?

    • If you are an avid cook, a 4 or 5-burner model is best.

    • Consider the placement of pots. Place your largest pots side by side, and check whether there is enough space between the burners to accommodate them easily.

    • Decide between freestanding or counter-sunk models, based on your ease of use.

  • What should I keep in mind when choosing my chimney?

    • Focus on wattage (power consumption), suction (smoke removal efficiency) and design (how it looks).

    • A hooded chimney is typically more efficient than a straight-line model.

    • A chimney fitted with a motion sensor to switch on and off, and increase fan speeds, is always good to have.

  • What are the modular kitchen cabinet design styles that I could choose?

    • Flat-faced designs are sleek, minimalist, and offer a modern look.

    • Panelled cabinets have raised or recessed centre panels and lend a more traditional vibe.

    • Shaker-style shutters have a recessed centre panel, clean lines, and fall in between old-world charm and modern aesthetics.

  • Can I customise my modular kitchen cabinets?

Yes, of course you can, and this is the beauty of a modular kitchen! Choose from a variety of shutter styles, colours, materials and finishes to give your modular kitchen cabinets a unique look. You can also switch around the cabinet configuration and choose different accessories that work best for your space.

  • Do all kitchens come with a built-in countertop?

Yes, all our kitchens come with a built-in countertop.

  • What are the different material options for modular kitchen countertops?

You can choose from granite, marble, quartz, or Corian countertops. Choose the colours, finish and pattern in line with your aesthetic preferences.

  • What are my material options for the backsplash in my modular kitchen design?

Your modular kitchen backsplash can be a style statement with easy-clean options like ceramic tiles, vitrified tiles, glass, or matching countertop materials like granite and quartz. Want a sleek look? Try tempered glass or mirror finishes. Remember to choose polished over textured surfaces to keep cleaning simple.

  • My builder has already given us a countertop, but no cabinets. Can we still install modular kitchen cabinets in this space?

Yes, we can work with the space and existing countertops, although it is always advised to remove the countertop for a more sleek and seamless appearance. We can try to remove and reuse the same countertop if it is fitted only on brackets, but be advised that if it is supported on half-brick walls it is likely to break when removed.

  • What types of lighting design can I use in my modular kitchen?

The right lighting design can make or break the ambience and functionality of your kitchen. Blend ambient ceiling lights with task-focused LEDs under cabinets and over workspaces. Add accent lighting inside cabinets and above displays for that extra sparkle. And don't forget nature's touch – maximise those windows for the perfect mix of sunlight and ventilation!

  • What types of hardware, hinges and fittings are used in HomeLane modular kitchen designs?

We use a range of premium brands for hinges and fittings, including Hettich and Ebco. You can choose from soft-close channels, magnetic latches, hydraulic lift-up hinges, push-to-open systems, corner unit mechanisms, telescopic channels, auto-closing systems, and many others.  We use knobs and handles made of stainless steel, chrome, brass, copper, ceramic and porcelain.

  • Is there a warranty on my HomeLane modular kitchen?

Yes, we offer a flat 10-year warranty on materials and craftsmanship. Read our Terms and Conditions to know more.

  • How can I make my modular kitchen design child-safe?

Make your kitchen child-safe with rounded countertops and soft-close drawers. Keep sharp objects out of reach, install slip-proof flooring, and choose hobs with protective lids. Don't forget child-safe seals for all electrical outlets – because peace of mind matters when busy little angels are around!

  • What are some of the latest modular kitchen designs that are trending at the moment?

Today's latest modular kitchen designs blend style with innovation. Think sleek handleless cabinets, striking two-tone designs, and statement islands with waterfall edges. Smart features like IoT-connected appliances and hidden storage keep things efficient, while sustainable elements – from touchless faucets to LED lighting – make your kitchen future-ready. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets maximise space beautifully.
